| With the addition of our
Icelandic buckskin Fostri eight years ago, came a shared love
for the Icelandic horse. An undeniable personality, a willingness
to please, a smooth and easy gait and those unmistakable illustrious
locks simply make these horses irresistible! The Gorrie family,
and owners of Blackjack Farms, traveled to Iceland in the summer
of 1998 and returned to the U.S. |
| with an incredible
array of breeding stock, including a prize-winning bay pinto
stallion, Glaesir fra Husey, and three distinguished brood
mares. After five years of breeding the imported stock, we
currently have two five-year-olds, one four-year old, two three-year
olds, and a two-year old. We are excited to announce that the
eldest of our herd, Heidi (a chestnut mare) and Tryggur (a
gray gelding), are now on the market and are sure to make a
loving and trustworthy companion for someone special.
The Icelandic Horse has a thousand
year history. Purebred since
the 10th century, the Icelandic Horse is renowned for |
|
| being
hardy, athletic, independent, spirited, friendly, adaptable,
and sure-footed, with five natural gaits: the walk, trot,
canter, tolt, and pace. Averaging 13 to 14 hands tall, the
Icelandic Horse is a versatile family riding horse, bred
to carry adults at a fast pleasing gait over long distances.
It is distinctive for its thick and often double-sided mane
and long tail, and remarkable for its wide range of colors.
In addition to formal horse shows and competitions, Icelandic
Horses are widely used for cross-country rides and long-distance
trekking. They have also competed in dressage, jumping, and
endurance races. These horses have stolen our hearts, and
are sure to win a place in yours. If you would care to learn
more of our program, please contact Kaci Sims, Icelandic
coordinator at 205-936-9627 or visit the Blackjack Farms Icelandic Horses Website. |
